Gottfried Bechtold

Born 1947 in Bregenz, Austria, Gottfried Bechtold lives and works in Hörbranz, Vorarlberg, Austria. He trained to be a stonemason in Hallein and has served as a visiting Professor at Cornell University in Ithaca and the University of Graz. In 2009, he received the Austrian award for video and media art. His most famous works include his Interkontinentale Skulptur (Intercontinental Sculpture) (1985/87) in the forecourt of the Austria Center in Vienna, the work 100 Tage Anwesenheit in Kassel (100 Days on Location in Kassel) (1972) for documenta 5, and Betonporsche (Concrete Porsche) (1971/2001). He has also created numerous public art installations, including for the University of Konstanz and the Medienhaus Vorarlberg, as well as the sculpture Ready Maid for the newly designed forecourt of the Festspielhaus Bregenz.
