an arts space for weikendorf

The brief called for a design for a public square without closer stipulations, in the centre of Weikendorf in the course of the renovation and extension of the town hall, and the building of a new civic centre. The fire brigade's old depot is adjacent to this ensemble of buildings. The former fire brigade hall was adapted as a space for exhibitions of contemporary art, which can now be used as a venue for all media. From outside the space looks almost unreal, as if it had been implanted in the hall. At the same time, the 'arts centre' can also be read as an installation in public space, a concave sculpture with the interior visible through a glass wall.
The otherwise unaltered building has undergone a shift in function and paradigm with the installation, in both the spatial architectural dimension and on a functional social level.
A key feature of the Kunstraum Weikendorf project is its state of continual change as a venue where artists are invited to complete temporary installations every six months.
In a rural setting, where the encounter with contemporary art is not an everyday occurrence, the intention is to stimulate a permanent newly invigorated engagement with different positions in today's contemporary art production. Achieving social, cultural or infrastructural improvements, aiming to do so, or at least engaging with the structures of the community concerned with art in public space has now become almost routine practise. In such an engagement lies the precision of the project in its public context and process orientation. Although one can still speak of a 'protected space for art'.
Precisely this is why the art functions in public space here, it has been the cause of much debate on art and its impact since its launch and without endeavouring to be participatory because it remains autonomous.
