Information

The central element on the square is the Wolkon, an accessible multifunctional object. It is an emblem of the Kulturlandschaft Paasdorf that serves as a bus stop with a viewing platform and as an outdoor stage. The square was covered with asphalt surfacing to have a variety of uses.

In the course of the redesign of the main road through Paasdorf the village square with the bus stop was to be redesigned, too, and the "cultural landscape of Paasdorf" was to be designated with a landmark.
Architects feld72 placed the emphasis on the integration of a wide range of uses for the square that counteracts any separation between different functions. They face the challenge of allowing quality recreational use despite limited space and a difficult position on a through road by covering the square with an unbroken asphalt plane that has parking spaces marked while still offering multipurpose surface.
It is geared towards everyday usage by local residents, as well as by visitors to the cultural landscape of Paasdorf. The square alters its appearance according to fluctuations in use over the course of the day, or the season. Unused parking spaces provide wooden terracing as cycle facilities for rented bicycles to experience the cultural landscape directly, or usage as seating. The central element on the square is a multifunctional object, the Wolkon - a clearly visible landmark that functions as a bus stop with a viewing pedestal. The Wolkon is a stage - both for everyday use and for special festivities. The accessible balcony becomes a DJ pulpit, a "Speaker's Corner soap box" - and a viewing platform that also provides orientation for tourists. "How public this village square is, is the responsibility of its users at any given time" (feld72). The square becomes an urban topographical feature capable of allowing anything ranging from specific events to permanent usage.
