Imagine the following scenario: You are travelling around Lower Austria in a car or by bike. In the midst of the idyllic countryside, you come across a strange object or an exciting situation on a green. Your thoughts begin to rotate, your feelings release associations. It is probably not your first encounter with art in public space. You are fascinated, riveted; you look for a telephone box, it's out of order. You grasp for your video camera, which you always carry with you, and capture the moment, the atmosphere or the piece of work so you can show it to your best friends. Unfortunately they don't have much spare time, and you cut the sequence to thirty seconds. In 30 seconds you manage to convey the idea, the countryside and the piece of work not only to your friends but also to many thousands of cinema-goers.
That was the theme of 'make art public', 30 second spots on art in public space in Lower Austria. Six Austrian colleges and universities participated. Due to the large number of submissions the Lower Austrian jury had a difficult decision to make. The award ceremony was held with a big party (moderated by Diane Shooman) at the Semperdepot, Vienna. As the results were so good, in October 2001 the two winning spots were shown in cinemas across Austria.
First prize went to the film by Katharina Buschek and Markus Gansberger/Linz Universität für künstlerische und industrielle Gestaltung. A car drives along a country road. Right and left of the car are fields. Suddenly the car reverses and then stops, a man looks out of the window. The car drives on again.
Second prize went to Catrin Bolt/Academy of Fine Arts for her film where she is the only protagonist and plays out tempestuous love scenes with sculptures in public space, whether with a classicist female nude or with a cardboard policeman.
