Information

The artists created an access with a path that is at the same time a passagewaywith fountain rings made of reinforced concrete. Instead of earth the concrete rings that are illuminated from the inside are arranged on the ground. They have not been pushed together but have space in betweento let in light and allow one to 'look through.'

The object of the competition was the design of a fence around the building of the Kulturwerkstätte that also serves as a sign, a logo of the place. The project 'Blindgänger' (as the artists refer to it ambivalently) was based on the idea of a linear space replacing a fence. The space was to have the same function of a fence, i.e., delineation, but was also to act as a diverse experiential space for human senses. The artists created an access with a path that is at the same time a passageway that indicates to the visitors that they are entering an area that has a new and, as of late, public function. The material used by the artists - fountain rings made of reinforced concrete - is a standard product but is put to use here in an unusual way. Instead of earth the concrete rings that are illuminated from the inside are arranged on the ground. They have not been pushed together as would be necessary in a fountain or channel but have space in between. This space is supposed to let in light and allow one to 'look through.' The material concrete is used to refer to the historical layer of the earlier function. In this sense, the work serves to both commemorate and to anticipate something. Thus this curved cylinder-shaped space is one of transformation that can evoke expectations in a person coming from a more profane environment. Those who just walk through have a spatial experience. Their attention is directed to the surrounding landscape to which the northern opening is oriented.
