Information

The abstract sculpture of bend and wrapped copper piping is based on the idea of representing a volume with lines. The artificial oxidization of the metal makes the individual lengths of copper piping more visually restrained, and the sculpture looks as if it had been cast.

In his work with copper pipe which was part of a series of sculptures made by other artists on the same theme, Michael Kienzer sought to create volume from a linear shape. The resulting body, however, does not represent an upright figure and refuses to assume a figurative character. (…) Copper pipes that are so soft that they can be bent by hand could be wrapped infinitely. It is precisely the arbitrariness of when one stops and suddenly discovers that the work is completed accounts for the dynamic character of the sculpture. The focus is on modelling something with a high degree of manual quality and not the creation of spectacular shapes. (…) The natural process is anticipated by the artificial oxidation of the metal so as to emphasise the entire shape and allow the individual pipes to recede into the background. The resulting impression is a sculpture made from one cast. The surface transcends the construction.
