Information

The façade design to the gym unites painting with sculptural elements of sheet metal. A series of symbols, numbers and letters are accompanied by figures moving towards the school entrance.
The façade had to be restored following the appearance of cracks, and the artwork was removed in the process.

At the primary school in Hauskirchen, which is a simple architectural volume, in the course of renovation work it was decided that the east facade (the so-called fire-wall) of the gymnasium should be designed by an artist, who at the same time should help to present the school building itself in an artistic way. It seemed to me that this would only be possible by combining the east facade and the continuing north facade and using both surfaces for my project. The work then proceeded from the east wall, around the corner and along the north facade in the direction of the school entrance. On the way to school one already perceives the design on the school building: the painting and two sculptural elements made of galphos metal, a plus '+' on the east wall and a 'Y' on the north facade. That means signs and numbers and two letters accompanied by figures carrying them at a rapid pace into the school building. The figures are simple, painterly yet striking and partly surrounded by yellow areas that could also be openings. The whole execution of the work required a good six weeks, which I would not want to have missed. Despite minor difficulties, usually concerning the village authorities, the artistic process in the public space was for me a very significant and positive experience.
