Gerhard Kohlbauer :
Community Hall in Ernstbrunn

Information

Kohlbauer's 4 metre high sculpture is the skeleton of a column. Four timber trunks were cast in metal. The cavity consists of thin steel cable and several layers of transparent epoxy resin. The location in front of the community hall was chosen by conducting an opinion poll in the local community.

The pillar tackles problems of space, light and colour. However this pillar is essentially the description of a line. Two vertical, overlapping areas, in the form of a covering with thin steel ropes and multi-layered synthetic transparent resin, produce a line which is here recognisable as an ‘intermediate space’ because the materials have been left out and at the same time it forms the imaginary axis. On the outside, the areas are connected by means of four metal rods. Two circular metal discs with a circumference of 80cm and composed of several parts pressed together form the lower and upper end. The overall height amounts to 4 metres. The original material is wood. Irregularities and the texture of the surface are retained through manufacture in a metal cast. The artist wanted to put the pillars up on the main square – however, after a public opinion poll among the inhabitants of the community, it was decided in favour of a location next to the Volkshalle.
